With the design of the iBooKam, we wanted to change the most popular camera phone in use on flickr, into a more professional point and shoot class camera. To achieve this we built off of the iBooKās design. Adding features that we feel have transformed the iPhone 4 into more of a camera than phone. While still keeping the beauty and slimness of the bamboo case in mind.
The first issue we noticed with the iPhone 4 as a serious point and shoot camera was stability. The phone sure is thin and sleek but that is only good in your pocket. We addressed this by creating a case that is more comfortable in the users hand and has stable mounting points for a tripod mount.
Ergonomic finger tabs provide grip and stability, giving the user more control of their device in multiple positions. The camera shutter button (volume + in iOS 5) is highlighted with a relief to guide the users finger to the button without looking down. Making this the first iOS 5 pre-compatible case! The logo hole also serves as a finger grip in many different hand positions. 3 slots cut out of the back allow the user to place the RAYNOX step up ring into them for use as a kickstand in landscape (2 angles) and portrait orientations. Two universal-loop attachment points are machined right in to the case. Allowing for attachment of a wrist or neck strap. A very apple store badge look is achievable!
We included not just 1 tripod mount, but 5 (1/4-20) mounting points. Allowing for many different configurations. Keeping the width of the iBooKam as small as possible was a major goal. So the depth of these threads has been designed specifically to work with the JOBY Gorillapod quick release plate thread length. This length is on the short side of the standard, so when using iBooKam with most other tripods you will need to have a spacer (washer, O-ring) handy. Tightened just snug and the metal frame of the phone will be untouched. You may contact the metal frame of the phone if any screw or mount is over tightened. So use caution when making attachments. We are not liable for any damage the user may cause to their phone.
Using the JOBY quick release plate it is even possible to mount the iBooKam to the shoe mount on most DSLR and SLR cameras. The finger tabs of the iBooKam allow for use of the built in pop up flash on NIKON D3100, D90 cameras. Others may be possible and we will update this list in the future. Mounting the iPhone 4 to a SLR type camera allows simultaneous 720p video and high quality pictures to be taken with a single setup. Using an EYE-FI memory card in the DSLR and the iBooKam, a photographer could upload pictures and video to the cloud through the iPhone on the go during a photo shoot. Allowing the customer and there guests a preview of the photos and video. Or perhaps turn the iBooKam around and use a teleprompter app for a speech or reporting. All this and much more is possible using the iBooKam.
The second issue we noticed was a lack of adaptability between close shots (macro) and zoom (telephoto) shots. The iPhone has one of the best 5mp sensors available. But close up shots (4ft or less) are not fully captured due to the lack of optics. And zoom shots, using the phone's digital software zoom, become grainy as you zoom in.
We also threaded the ring around the logo so that when not in use the step ring adapter can be stored in the center of the phone. The RAYNOX 21mm x 37mm step ring also doubles as a kickstand for your phone. With four slots machined into the back, the iBooKam can position your phone in five different angles (4 portrait, 1 landscape).
The iBooKam is precision machined from a solid piece of bamboo. We then hand sand and finish the case with an oil blend. Bamboo itself is naturally antibacterial and so are the finishing products we use. Its like washing your hands every time you use your phone! Well kind of.
All ports and buttons are accessible, except for the sim-tray as this is not used often. Compatible with AT&T and Verizon model iPhone 4 and 4S.
We highly recommend that great caution is used when doing anything with your $600+ iPhone. If using a GorrillaPod to position your iPhone in a new and exciting position, we recommend double checking the stability of your setup before walking away from it. If you are someone that is prone to dropping your iPhone a lot, then we recommend you get an Otter Box brand case. They are built for ultimate protection. PEACHii cases are designed to mimick a soccer players shin gaurd. Protecting the leg (iPhone) from bruises and scrapes, not compound leg fractures.
